“If you want to change the world, pick up your pen and write.”
~Martin Luther
Unlike other beings on planet Earth, human beings possess a higher level of intelligence. This intelligence is reflected in all walks of life and has made possible the evolution of mankind from what it was in the past to what it is today. We have the capacity to reflect on the very beginning of our existence and how we have evolved in order to draw conclusions and benefit from them. Humans have designed numerous inventions, and these have made life easier for us. But one thing has enabled us to progress from generation to generation, and that is writing.
Writing has given life to our thoughts, making them immortal once they are written down and safely preserved somewhere. It has enabled us to communicate with one another by sharing our thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences. Writing is a tool for giving wisdom to youngsters, making it possible to learn from the past in order to build a better future. Writers of any kind, including novelists, poets, journalists, bloggers, speech writers, influence how we think as a society. We wouldn’t have history without writing. If we couldn’t write, we also wouldn’t have religious scriptures and the civilizations they’ve built for mankind.
Words give the world meaning
Words give the world and everything in it meaning. That’s why learning, reading, and writing are a part of our growth from childhood until we die. Learning cannot happen without reading, and reading cannot happen without writing. These skills are intertwined. It starts very early at school with assignments, writing essays, comprehending and answering questions, and demonstrating our understanding of a topic on paper. This not only helps us become more organized, but it also teaches us to follow a structure. Writing different assignments enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This is because it requires us to research and think through a topic before giving an answer. Planning and research engages the brain to work harder, and the more we practice the better our success.
Writing encourages creativity
Outside of the classroom, writing is an excellent form of self-expression. Virginia Woolf said, “Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written large in his works.” Writing encourages creativity and imagination, and writing about our fears and worries shrinks their impact. Often, the things we are afraid of seem so big because we make them big in our minds. But once we write them down, we realize they aren’t as scary as we originally thought. Making an abstract fear concrete by writing about it gives us the opportunity to think more about it. Via writing, we can explore creative ideas and possibilities, dream up new stories, conquer our fears, and accomplish whatever our minds desire!
Once we’re out of school, writing is crucial for our daily activities in all walks of life because it enables communication. Strong communication is what keeps the world moving. Consequently, communication is one of the most important aspects of the working world. It is needed to form trusting relationships, conduct interviews, close business deals, etc. In the past, written forms of communication consisted only of letters. Now, everything has changed with the development of technology. Organizations communicate increasingly via electronic methods, such as:
- Meeting chat pods / virtual discussions
- Instant messaging
- Shared documents in the cloud
These tools make it easier to explain our ideas to other people in real time. Since they can see our thoughts, they can understand them more easily. This has allowed us to work with people across times and places.
Conclusion
Writing can help keep our thoughts more organized because it is easier to see thought patterns after we write them down. This gives us the opportunity to figure out which thoughts are important, and they are more organized as a result. Written reflections help us define better paths forward and clarify our ideas for ourselves and others. They also help us figure out how we want things to unfold. Sometimes, an idea makes little sense until we see it in words.
Reading, learning, and writing have shaped what we have achieved as individuals and as a society. This includes our personality, our past, and how we perceive the world. Written communication is the embryo of what mankind is today. It is the foundation of different civilizations across the world, including ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, ancient Persia, and others. Through forms of writing, societies like these were able to preserve art, science, collective wisdom, spirit, and aspirations. As Albert Camus states, “the purpose of a writer is to keep civilization from destroying itself.” Writing is a very powerful tool that can be used to make our dreams come true, to change wrong into right, to fight injustice, and to create a better future. Let’s finish this short article with the words of C. S. Lewis, a great thinker: “You can make anything by writing.”
